Enrollment Steps for Incoming Students

Activate Your BGSU Account

So that you can receive all future information and complete your enrollment, you will need to be connected to BGSU. This account will give you access to an email account and to the MyBGSU Web portal to conduct many types of University business. From the My BGSU Web portal, you will select on-campus housing, set up your new student orientation date so you can register for classes, take placement exams and complete your schedule of classes.

Apply for Financial Aid

Incoming students for the summer terms may apply for federal and state financial aid anytime after January 1. To be considered for need-based aid, you must be an admitted student and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When completing the FAFSA, be sure to list BGSU’s school code: 003018.

Choose Your Housing

Housing is available for returning and new students by signing up through the MyBGSU web portal under My Room and Meals starting April 2nd. If you have questions about the process or accommodations, contact the Office of Residence Life at 419-372-2011.

Register for Classes

First semester freshmen should follow these steps to register for summer classes.

  • Call your college or academic office and identify yourself as a summer new student and request an academic advising appointment. Advising offices and other helpful phone numbers are found below.
  • Prior to meeting with your advisor, complete your placement tests online. Placement tests are required before you may register for classes. With these test scores, your high school grades and SAT or ACT scores, your advisor will help you determine which courses to select for the summer term.
  • If you are an online or adult/evening student, you may also want to call Nontraditional & Transfer Student Services at 1-877-650-8165 for more information.

For more information contact the Office of New Student Orientation and First Year Programs at 419-372-0353 or by email at orientation@bgsu.edu.

Transfer students are eligible to register for courses with continuing BGSU students beginning mid-semester, prior to the term they wish to begin. To be advised and appropriately prepared to schedule classes, you must contact your college advising office. Talk with your advisor about placement test requirements at BGSU. Advising offices and other helpful phone numbers are found below. When contacting your college office to request an appointment, be sure to indicate that you are a summer term transfer student.

Orientation 101

There is no formal summer term orientation. To register for summer classes follow the instructions above in the Register for Classes section. To be best prepared to begin your education at BGSU, you are encouraged to visit our online resource center, the Orientation Station. The Orientation Station includes important information, as well as a checklist of things to do and read about before and after beginning classes.

If you are interested in participating in Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR), you are welcome to participate and attend one of the SOAR events that takes place in June and July. It is available but not required. To learn more or schedule a date please contact the Office of New Student Orientation and First Year Programs at 419-372-0353.

Transfer of Credit Information

An official evaluation of your attempted college credits will be made by the Office of Registration and Records. Questions regarding the transfer of credit from other institutions should be directed to the Transfer Evaluation Office in the Office of Registration and Records by email at transfer@bgsu.edu or by calling 419-372-7959.

If you are currently taking classes or plan to take more classes before enrolling at BGSU, have an updated official transcript sent to BGSU as soon as the courses are completed. This will ensure an accurate evaluation of your transfer credits.

Send Your Final Transcripts

If you are still enrolled in high school or college, once you have completed your final semester of high school or college, please have those final transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions (once final grades or the degree has been posted). The mailing address is:
